Facebook’s 10th Birthday: 0 to 1.23 billion in 10 years!

Over the last decade, the social giant Facebook has attracted billions of people who use the social network to connect with friends, post statuses about their life and share photos.

Last week, Facebook reported record revenues of £1.5 billion from 750 million daily users! This was up £600 million from the previous year.

Facebook began in February 2004, when Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg launched the social network from his room. But how did it go from his room to the most popular social network in the world? In honour of Facebook’s 10 year anniversary, here is a brief history of Facebooks key moments:

October 2005 – Facebook expands and begins to add international school networks

April 2006 – Facebook for Mobile launches

September 2006 – The launch of the infamous News Feed hits Facebook

September 2006 – Facebook allows anyone to sign up

November 2007 – Facebook launches self-service ads and Facebook pages

April 2008 – Facebook launches Facebook Chat

July 2008 – The Facebook iPhone app launches

May 2012 - Facebook goes public, being valued at $104 billion, which is the largest valuation to date for a newly listed public company

October 2012 – Over 1 billion people are active on Facebook

January 2013 – Facebook rolls out Facebook Graph Search

April 2013 – Facebook launches a new Timeline

June 2013 – Facebook announces the support for hashtags

February 2014 – Facebook marks the 10^th anniversary of its launch!

 

Today Facebook has over 1.23 billion active monthly users. They have had over 400 billion photos shared, over 25 million active small business pages created and over 6 billion Likes occurring every day!
