What to expect from the Samsung Galaxy S5

Samsung has officially unveiled the Galaxy S5 at Mobile World Congress and they haven’t disappointed.

The Spec

Samsung as per usual has loaded up the Galaxy S5 with an impressive spec, starting off with the quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor, which runs at an amazing 2.5GHz. As well as this the Galaxy S5 has 2GB of RAM which means it won’t have a problem running any app smoothly.

The smartphone comes with Android 4.4 KitKat and a new version of Samsung’s TouchWiz interface.

Samsung also claims the battle life of the Galaxy S5 should last for 21 hours of talk time.

The Galaxy S5 comes in a 16GB or a 32GB handset, but you can add up to 64GB with an extra microSD.

The case

Samsung has stuck with the polycarbonate build (rumours regarding the S5 having a metal body turned out false) but we weren’t completely disappointed as the dimpled, matte soft-touch back is a lot nicer to look at.

A major change from the S4 is that the Galaxy S5 is now waterproof, just like the Sony Xperia. The case is sealed to prevent water or dust getting inside the smartphone and Samsung say you can dunk the handset into water for up to 30 minutes without damaging it.

The casing is also available in several colours, Shimmery White, Copper Gold, Charcoal Black and Electric Blue.

The size

The Galaxy S5 is a little heavy and bigger than the S4, weighing in at 145g and its dimensions are 142mm x 72.5mm x 8.1mm (a fair size bigger than the iPhone 5S). It has retained a full HD 1080p resolution; however the AMOLED screen is slightly bigger than the S4 which was 129.54mm.

Features

Fingerprint scanner

The Galaxy S5 has been fitted with a fingerprint scanner, that allows you to unlock the phone, make instant mobile payments via PayPal integration and finally to protect important documents.

Camera

The 16 megapixel camera comes with an LED flash, an advanced HDR mode and post-shot focusing. However the cameras best new feature has to be its super-fast autofocus. Samsung have claimed that it is the fastest on any smartphone at up to 0.3 seconds.

Fitness!

The Galaxy S5 is equipped with a brand new version of the S Health app that provides a FitBit-style activity tracker that helps you to monitor your workouts and diets. It comes with a built in heart rate monitor and will integrate with Samsung’s wearable tech.

Release date and pricing

Samsung has announced that the Galaxy S5 will be launched on the 11th April 2014; however they haven't mentioned anything about the pricing.
