Rumoured: iPhone 7 to be announced on September 12th

| Technology

The highly anticipated next generation iPhone is set to be released later this year but do we actually know when it will be unveiled? Possibly.

The news has come from the moderately reliable @evleaks that Apple will announce this year’s iPhones on the 12th September.

This date does seem quite possible as its predecessors were announced at similar mid-September dates:

  • iPhone 6 and 6S - September 9th
  • iPhone 5S - September 10th
  • iPhone 5 - September 12th

And to be available a week or two after it has been announced.

Evan Blass (@evleaks) tweeted:

iPhone 2016 release: week of September 12th.

The unusual thing about this tweet is that he refers to the new iPhone as “iPhone 2016” and not “iPhone 7” which may suggest Apple aren’t planning on sticking to the numbered name on this year’s devices.

Apple have always stuck to the numeral based name for their iPhone devices (3G, 4, 5, 6) which has been followed by an “S” version the following year.

Apple may choose to break tradition this year when they release the new iPhone which resembles the iPhone 6S (if the leaked images can be believed).

The similar design may be a little disappointing to fans but Apple is supposedly saving the major redesign of its iPhone for next year’s device which will coincide with the iPhone’s 10th anniversary.

Apple will soon be sending out invites to their summer event so we will confirm the dates as soon as we hear!
