Twitter isn’t just about gaining a good following; it is also about keeping them. Most of the time if you focus on keeping your current Twitter followers it will also help you to engage more and gain more retweets and responses, which in turn will allow you to gain more followers.

However here are the most common reasons why people are unfollowing you on Twitter:

You are being too noisy. This seems to be the worst crime you can commit on Twitter. Noisiness is the number one reason why someone will unfollow you on Twitter.

2) 48% of people will unfollow you because…

You self-promote too much. The second most common reason why someone will unfollow you is too much self-promotion. This is very common among estate agents and is something you definitely should avoid.

5) 29% of people will unfollow you because…

You are too repetitive… This is another one that is very common among estate agents. How many of you are guilty of only posting property after property onto your social media accounts. The majority of your followers aren’t interested in seeing your property listings; if they were they would visit your website.

You are rude, offensive or unprofessional. This one explains itself.

You post too many begging tweets.

9) 27% of people will unfollow you because…

Your account seems to be inactive. Being too quiet on Twitter is a quick way to lose all your followers, why would anyone follow someone that hardly ever tweets? Aim to tweet at least once a day; don’t leave huge gaps in between tweets.

10) 21% of people will unfollow you because…

You don’t post conversational tweets.  As I said before, Twitter is all about engaging with your audience. People want to communicate on Twitter, so why not tweet about topical subjects that people can ask questions or add too.
