The death of a domain name
Reports have come in that the
Yugoslavian domain of .yu will cease to be from the 30th of
September since the former soviet country no longer exists.
Instead, .rs for Serbia and .me for Montenegro has been assigned
for each country, respectively, by the Internet Corporation for
Assigned Names and Numbers (I.C.A.N.N).
Although .yu expiry will most likely pass without notice from
estate agents here in the United Kingdom, but there is an Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) lesson to be learnt.
Many estate agents have bought a domain name such as .biz but
there are SEO implications of this. Google, the UK's
largest search engine with 90% of the market share, will look at
the location of the person performing the search. If the person
performing the search is in the UK, domain names such as .co.uk or
.com will be higher than if a person from Australia performs the
